CITY HALL – The Arcata City Council announces an opening on the Economic Development Committee and invites interested citizens living within Arcata city limits or within the Arcata Planning Area to apply. This committee member would complete a three-year term expiring on January 31, 2011.

The Economic Development Committee consists of seven members who serve in an advisory capacity to the Council and City staff in matters pertaining to economic development, including but not limited to manufacturing, agriculture, retail, tourism, and business expansion and revitalization; make recommendations to the Community Development Agency Board with respect to plans, projects, and proposals affecting the Redevelopment Project Area and within the scope of the Redevelopment Plan; and review economic trends and make recommendations.

The Arcata City Council seeks a volunteer to fill a vacancy on the Committee on Democracy and Corporations. Arcata residents or people who live or work within the Arcata Planning Area are urged to apply. The Committee member would complete a term expiring July 31, 2011.

The Committee on Democracy and Corporations consists of seven members who research options on how our community is taking action to control “pattern restaurants” from moving into downtown areas, cooperate with other communities that are working on socially responsible investing, advise the City Council on ways to promote “free and fair trade,” advise the City Council on ordinances and actions our community can take regarding corporations that have negative social and environmental impacts, and work to develop a policy that the City Council can implement to not do business with corporations that violate fair labor standards and/or environmental laws.

Committeemembers serve without compensation. Interested persons may contact the Arcata City Manager’s Office at (707) 822-5953. Applications are available at the City Manager’s Office, 736 F Street, Arcata, CA 95521, Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Applications are also available online at cityofarcata.org.

Application deadline is Friday, May 14 at 5, p.m. Interviews with the City Council take place Wednesday, May 19, at 5:30 p.m.

The Arcata City Council invites interested citizens who live or work in Arcata or the Arcata planning area to apply to be Planning Commissioners. Currently, there are two vacancies for terms expiring on July 31, 2014. Commissioners serve without compensation and attend two meetings per month.

The Planning Commission consists of seven members who serve in an advisory capacity to the City Council and City staff on all matters pertaining to planning and the physical development of the City and surrounding areas; provide recommendations to the City Council regarding the preparation, adoption, amendment, administration, and implementation of the General Plan and its various elements, the Local Coastal Plan, and Specific Plans; provide recommendations to the City Council regarding preparation, adoption, amendment and implementation of the City’s land use, zoning, subdivision, development review, design review, environmental review, and other related policies, ordinances, and standards; review and take action to approve, subject to conditions or modifications, or to deny various applications for development or use of land as provided in the City’s Land Use and Development Guide, Title IX of the Arcata Municipal Code.

Application deadline is Friday, July 9, p.m. Interviews with the City Council take place Wednesday, July 21, 5:30 p.m.
