Eye Staff Report

ARCATA HIGH – Facing drastic funding shortfalls, the Northern Humboldt Union High School District is considering a $25 million bond issue.

The matter will be discussed at the Tuesday, June 29 meeting of the NHUHSD Governing Board, to be held at the Arcata High School Multipurpose Room beginning at 6 p.m.

If approved by voters in November, bonds would be sold over a seven-year period, in 2011, 2013, 2015 and 2017. It could fund a number of improvements for both Arcata and McKinleyville high schools, including improved classrooms and libraries. The bond funds may not be used for teachers’ salaries or ther operating expenses.

The NHUHSD trustees would like to hear public opinion about the proposal and therefore a second information gathering meeting will be held Tuesday, June 29th at 6pm in the Arcata High Multipurpose room.

The public is encouraged to speak.

As the Arcata High Library Media Teacher, a trustee on an elementary board, and the parent of an elementary- aged child, I hope that the NHUHSD decides to place the bond proposal on the ballot. Though I know that times are tough, the proposed bond would add the cost of a pizzeria dinner for an average family to current property taxes.

Our schools are in urgent need of modernization to help meet the needs of our 21st Century Learners and to better prepare our students for the workplace. The recent passage of school bonds across the state and local areas proves that our communities support education.

Any bond measure passed now may take 3-8 years to show-up the schools. Your young children, grandchildren, and neighbors’ children will be directly affected by the choices we make to help our schools today. Many of the proposed improvement projects will also benefit the local area by providing modernized facilities for community groups.

The district has posted a link titled “School Bond Information” on its website which responds to the most frequently asked questions as well as the bond survey results and contact information.

Please come to the Tuesday, June 29th 6pm meeting at Arcata High in the MPR and voice your thoughts.
