The great thing about Arcata is its diversity. As Jessica pointed out, not all Valley Westers oppose the progressive traffic calming measures there. And the roundabouts and other streetscape upgrades have made a big improvement throughout the rest of town.

While I disagree, profoundly, with the sentiments expressed by some of the attendees at the meeting covered in this story, I hope that we never lose their skepticism. I don’t think they needed to be so antagonistic and in some cases bigoted, but we’ll always need someone around to make planners explain and validate their proposals.

What a terrible headline and an extremely disappointing article.Your article implies residents are against the planned improvements to Valley West, that is not so. Most resident are very supportive of upgrading the Valley West area, in fact there were two meeting for residents that were very positive. One of those meeting the Eye was there and published photos of that meeting.
This last meeting was aimed at businesses not residents. The resident meetings were positive community building meetings brimming with hope and excitement. There is no mention of that in your article. Valley West business are NOT valley West residents. This piece of yellow journalism only adds to the negative view of Valley West. Shame of the Arcata Eye for embracing CNN style journalism.
