HUMBOLDT – The latest film seen shooting on the streets of Arcata and environs goes by the name of GOD IS A COMMUNIST?!* (show me heart universe). In case you can’t tell by the title, it’s an indie.
Carol Howard, who serves as co-producer, first assistant director and all-around problem solver, said the film is a “90-scene epic Monty Pythonesque comedy.”
Originally a three-scene play by John Poznanter, the film includes a number of historical and mythological references and “really convoluted” plot, Howard said.
One characterization of the film’s subtext, Howard said, is that “if you do the same thing day after day and don’t break out of the box, you’re doomed.”
She added that “humankind’s potential” is celebrated.
With a budget of just $60,000-plus, the film takes maximum advantage of Humboldt’s stunningly variegated scenery.
Shoot locations include the Samoa Roundhouse, Fairhaven Business Park, German Motors of Arcata, Yifang Imports and Mad River Community Hospital. Oh, and Mt. Shasta.
“If the film industry only knew about this place!” Howard said. “It’s like Universal Studios north.”
Pozananter is directing the film, which stars Karl Langer as the Earl of Arcata. Voice actor Jim Ward provides narration. Glen Quaranta is director of photography. Jeremiah Johnston and John Wolfstone are assistant directors. Propmistress is Teri Grunthaner. Nathan Walter is stagehand. Max Hernandez is the boom operator.
Post production begins next month.
