I look forward to you joining us.  We, in Arcata, appreciate your willingness to start another term at HSU. We hope this is a year full of stimulating learning. HSU students are known to be the finest the world over. When you complete your studies, you will be a benefit to all societies in the world as you carry your knowledge forward, making our world work better for all people.

Arcata continues to strive in its pursuit for environmental sensitivity. The forestlands and marshes surround us and we Arcatans are intent on preserving our natural environment for the enjoyment of its visitors and residents. We ask you to join us in this task.

The City of Arcata is very interested in public involvement and has 13 committees that assist the City in attaining its goals: a reduction in energy usage, waste and water reduction, protection of waterways and scenic views, more forestlands and trails, alternative transportation and economic viability.

In the spirit of the above, a few suggestions while living in Arcata – wear your bike helmet, use the proscribed bike lanes in the right direction, get to know your neighbors, be sensitive to others, watch your drinking, beware of those who wish you to do something illegal, study hard, do not litter and enjoy all that nature has to offer.

We look forward to getting to know you and wish you the best in the coming year.

Alexandra Stillman is Arcata’s mayor.

It really must be a thrill to move to a new town… knowing that it will be home for many years while attending college. I do want to remind newcomers that it is an important election year… and many/most of you are still registered voters somewhere else… like old hometowns, etc. It is important for you to become immediately involved in your new hometown politics, so I suggest that you immediately register to vote here… and also apply for an absentee ballot just in case you are unable to vote on Nov. 2nd.

Also, you might want to pay attention to the Humboldt County District Attorney election. It might, at some point, affect you personally… and I know it will affect most of you politically.
If you are progressive, care about environment, justice, civil rights, and whether corporations and government officials are held to following the law.. I’d suggest that you google Paul Gallegos name, and take a close look at what he represents as a district attorney. He definitely brought the county from behind the redwood curtain into the 21st century. See his website at: http://www.VotePaul.org

The weather gets good up there in Sept,Oct,Nov..enjoy!\

You are right the DA election is important so all of you should take a loog at Mr. Gallegos record. The man cant tell the truth about anything and he is an embarrassment as a proecutor, look at the Bradshaw case 12 years for murdering your wife or the Nicole Quigley case 1 to 12 years for murdering a 9 year old girl, the two women that were involved in Nicoles death walked free. Paul Gallegos lied saying he worked for the DA in Los Angeles. If you ever watched Gallegos in court it does not take long to realize he is a total bafoon.
