Council Candidate Forum Needs Participation – September 30, 2010
The City Council campaign is underway, with seven candidates for two seats. City government relies on citizen interest and enthusiasm, and so does the councilmember selection process. If regular folks like you don’t involve themselves, you surrender the process to special interests and single-issue zealots.
The Arcata Eye, Arcata Chamber of Commerce and KHSU 90.5 FM, in cooperation with the City of Arcata, will co-sponsor a City Council Candidate Forum Thursday, Thursday, Oct. 7 from 7 to 9 p.m. Doors open at 6 p.m.
To make it work, we need some things that have been slow to come forward this time around: volunteers to help set up and teardown, timekeeping and other chores, plus questions for the candidates and, when the time comes, attendance.
The last forum in 2008 was somewhat underattended. Maybe we haven’t pushed hard enough to make this forum happen, or maybe this sort of small-town institution – a candidate meet-and-greet – has had its day.
Feel free to post any thoughts or questions for candidates here or on the Eye’s Facebook page, or send them to news@arcataeye.com or call (707) 826-7000. You can also volunteer to be part of this civic process as well.
Political and other organizations wishing to table at the event are invited to do so. Please contact the Eye via the above means to reserve a spot.
