In addition to the 25 acres sold to the City at a discounted price, property owner Edith Stromberg donated this six-acre parcel off Beverly Way. It's not part of the Ridge Trail Project. City of Arcata Graphic

ARCATA – When Arcata fires on all cylinders, with all its institutions working together, very major things can happen very quickly.

That seems to be the case with the Arcata Ridge Trail Project, where citizens, forest user groups, property owners and the City have joined forces to raise funds and acquire a network of parcels for a new, three-mile trail connecting Valley West with Sunny Brae.

Last week, another thousand dollars came in from bids on a private dinner and concert by “The Brown Act” – Patrick Cleary, Clif Clendenen and Mark Lovelace, plus a tattoo by Visual Tattoo.

Added to the monies raised during the recent Bat N’ Rouge trail benefit, this brings the total funds gathered close to $20,000.

Along with Sunday’s equestrian event more Ridge Trail fundraising will take place Saturday, Oct. 30 with a Race For The Ridge Trail Festival in Redwood Park. The event will feature mountain bike races, a 5K running race, kids Halloween costume contest and bike ride, trick or treat fun, food, music and entertainment.racefortheridgetrail.wordpress.com

Last Thursday, escrow closed on the 25.5 acre Stromberg Property on Grotzman Creek on the Sunny Brae Forest’s western edge.

The $65,000 acquisition was funded via a $350,000 grant from the Caltrans Environmental Enhancement Program grant, a $15,000 donation by landowner Edith Stromberg and $5,000 in Forest Fund monies collected through the Humboldt Area Foundation.

Stromberg also donated a six-acre parcel on the north fork of Grotzman Creek off Beverly Way. This parcel contains a redwood stand and skunk cabbage bog.
