I realize this article is over two years old but Ive met people all over the place who knew who pete was in Arcata. The first time I ever met Pete was in 1998. I hitchiked to Arcata. I had never been there before. I was sitting in a little park near the freeway by myself when a man in rags gave me a take out container of chinese food. I hadn't eaten in awhile so I was starving and glad to get some food. Little did I know PETE FOR MAYOR!

Pete saved my life when I was temporarily homeless. I had developed a rather severe infection and had no money to fill my prescription. Pete found me crying and asked me what was wrong, when I told him how sick I was, he said "stay there, I'll be back honey" He was back in about an hour and a half with his hands full of money. He said "let's go to the pharmacy!"
Pete stood there in the pharmacy with me until I had my antibiotics, then he walked me home. I could have died if he hadn't intervened. If I loved him before, I practically worshipped him after. Whenever I had a little money, I'd give him a couple dollars. I'll never forget Pete.
They even wrote a punk rock song about him. he's my hero. April

Pete would call me "Little Rabbit." When I was a teenager I didn't get it. Now that I am thirty five I understand: I am a rabbit in the Chinese Horoscope. A lucky rabbit to have known the silly monkey.

I bought the silly monkey a banana to eat, years before he was affectionately known by that name. He left the banana at a payphone after he finished his phone call. We kept walking up the road together. That monkey never wanted a banana. I got him a beer. "Little Rabbit. Bunny Eyes! I love you!"

I took him back to the dorms a couple times for the night. He would never shower or eat or ask for anything. He would fall asleep in the corner by the living room closet, sitting upright, while we raged around him. He would pee in his sleep. The whole place would smell like him for days. A sage of sorts...I am sure the dorm authorities and campus police would have loved that.

What I remember most about Raggedy Pete is that, though he wore rags, he bought brand new Levis, all stiff and dark blue, and ripped them into rags to complete his ensemble.

That and he liked a girl named Ann - and someone told her that she was to be his Raggedy Ann.
