Marino Sichi, loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather passed away on May 8 at age 90.
Marino, one of Arcata’s first “curmudgeons” and very patriotic citizen was born in Bagni di Lucca, Italy to Ernesto and Giuseppina Sichi. Marino and his mother joined Ernesto in America in 1922. Marino attended Arcata Elementary School and graduated from Arcata High in 1938. Marino and Yolonda married in 1942 and celebrated 65 years of marriage before her passing in 2007.
Marino attended baking school in Chicago and worked for Big Loaf Bakery in Eureka. He and Yolonda operated the Student Store known as the Tigers Den near Arcata High. They were part owners of Albee and Buck wholesale candy where Marino made countless friends on his route. After selling the candy business he worked at Humboldt State University and Humboldt National Bank.
Marino was involved in many organizations. He was scoutmaster of Troop 9 for 46 years. During this time he was a great influence to many boys. He is fondly remembered by many former scouts who have remained in touch. His camping trips were legendary, especially the “snipe hunts”. He belonged to American Legion Post #274 and is often called “Mr. American Legion.” He was a member of the ICF, Arcata branch and the Citizen Volunteer Patrol Program in Arcata. He was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church and was instrumental in the funding of the new church. Marino also wrote a column for the Arcata Eye entitled “Good Old Arcata” where he shared his memories.
Marino and Yolonda enjoyed traveling, gambling and gardening , but most of all they loved and enjoyed their family and friends.
Marino was proceeded in death by his parents, his beloved wife and most recently his son Marino Sichi Jr.
He is survived by his daughters Katy Frost (Jeff), Janet Kelly (Del), daughter in law Maria Sichi, six grandchildren, Steven Frost (Deanna), Kristine Ratkowski (Scott), Justin Kelly (Carrie), Kimberly Hicks (Brian), Sandy and Sonia Martinez and five great grand-children.
Visitation will be at Paul’s Chapel on Friday, May 13 from 4 to 7 p.m., with Rosary at 7 p.m.
Mass will be held at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Arcata on Saturday, May 14 at 10 a.m. with internment at Ocean View Cemetery, Eureka.
Donations may be made to St. Mary’s School in Arcata.
Marino left his mark as great man and father and will greatly missed.
