The model that was going to be followed was indeed a management that was tried and true and known to be a superior method for raising happy productive dairy goats.
Most of the people that attended the meeting, including Sean, had no interest in the project other than making sure it was halted. They do not live bordering the property nor would they have been affected in any way if it had been built. They were strictly opposed to the idea of the dairy, a model that not only has been proven to be superior, but is also similar to every dairy in the county.
If the “community” has a problem with dairys, then why hasn’t there been any protests against the large cow dairy only 2 blocks from the Cypress Grove property? Or how about any other dairy near Arcata?

Misinformation, lies and exaggerations were what the nay sayers used to shoot down this wonderful project.

So now AG is not ok in an AG area?
The answer is if you don’t want to live near farms, don’t move to a subdivision right next to an AG zoned property. So Arcata, I guess it is time to decide if we are a town that welcomes AG or a town that welcomes sprawling subdivisions.

I am pretty sure the land the goat farm was going onto was in the County not in Arcata.

I am proud of the people who attended the meeting, were not happy with the limited answers, and planned the next meeting and the picketing when told it was a done deal in spite of their objections. The strength of their feelings is what turned the managements views. I am newish to the area and am really impressed.
There were 120 very well informed neighbors opposed to an untried plan that had many downsides for the community including 5 to 10 tons of manure and urine filled bedding produced each day. Maybe it would have been OK and maybe their untried plan would have resulted in a polluted area. Good for Arcata !

Sean Armstrong/ DanCo also = Tule Fog Farm, another faction that would be interested in that ground.

I have to agree with Lisa. Sean Armstrong/Danco….too bad neigbors, you could have had a world class goat farm, now you’re going to get a low income crappy housing development.

Nielsons. you are wrong. and you are going to live by a subdivision in the future. just because you think that there is only ONE way to practice animal husbandry (which is not even economically feasible, i will add) doesn’t mean you are right. you are a NIMBY and you should just fess up to that.

i have been following the story since the birth of the problem and know many in the neighborhood. this is really a tough dilemma. it’s hard to know what’s right, because the dairy doesnt actually exist yet. people can speculate about the greatness of the plan or the suckiness, but the truth is, until it’s built and we see how CG handles it, it is VERY hard to say what the correct path of action is. of course now it’s cancelled, leaving me somewhat unsatisfied.

Theresa should visit my closest neighbor who has a lively assortment of goats and pigs, kids, and other critters — but who practices modern animal husbandry — small herd, continual rotations within their grassy pasture, and so on. CGC/Emmi proposed a model goat farm that by any other name is a feed lot: 1200 animals, covered barns, hundreds of animals per acre when allowed out, large trucks in and out…and did we consider the stench and the 10 tons of manure produced daily, coliforms (biohazards), pasture depradation, runoff to our beautifully restored Janes Creek….? This isn’t funny, it’s a grave loss for those who can farm those 23 acres properly.

I think it rather funny that Arcatans want to keep the open land and keep agricultural areas abd yet are against this project. Yes, I don’t live there any more but if I did I think it would be cool to have the goats there. Better than those stinky cows and pigs down the road!
