H Street Project Underway, Plans Changing – September 7, 2011
H STREET – Day 1 of the H Street Improvement project went well, according to Public Works personnel on site. The aged asphalt came off easily, and water service was interrupted for only an hour and 15 minutes.
The City is issuing daily bulletins about the project’s progress. Plans have already been adapted to do sidewalk demolition prior to business hours.
Below is the Day 1 update.
Tuesday September 6, 2011
The H Street Project began today.
Kernen Construction arrived before 7 a.m.
Closed H Street at 10th
Closed 9th between H and Bret Hart Alley
Closed Vehicle access to both Alleys at H Street
Began removing asphalt starting at the center of 9th Street at 7 a.m. and finished at the edge of 10th Street by 4 p.m.
Began saw cutting and removing sidewalk along east side of H Street starting next to Arcata Liquors continuing north to 10th skipping the walk in front of the Plaza Professionals office and property management offices that were open for business
Bill Sheppard placed new valve cluster in the water line that runs along 9th Street between G and H. Limiting the water disruption to 1 hour 15 minutes a near personal best for him
Once the valve cluster and first 40 feet of water line going north were in place, Bill and his crew placed the new storm drain inlet in front of Arcata Liquors in preparation for new sidewalks by Kernen.
A lot of progress was made Monday and Kernen Construction plans to continue at this pace over the next few weeks. The plan has changed for the next few days; sidewalk demolition will mostly happen between 7 and 10 a.m. with the intent of re-establishing access before businesses are open. Temporary sidewalks will consist of compacted base rather than plywood.
Tuesday, Kernen will remove sidewalk and place base in am. Sheppard will finish Storm drain inlet then continue water line. Kernen will begin placing forms board for new concrete.
