Sunny Brae community forest is a hidden jewel of the community forest system. It is small, not many people know about it, and it is stunningly beautiful. Over the coarse of this summer 2/3 of the hiking trails in this forest have been (re)converted from single-track hiking paths into industrial scale logging roads. I am a proponent of selective logging and I realize that in the context of the mixed-use nature of the community forest system it is necessary to selectively log. What I didn't count on, and what was not mentioned in your article, is that by the time this summer is over all but a small connecting path will have been turned into logging roads. How is that mixed use? A 200 yard hiking path in the midst of a logging highway? In the 4 years Ive been here Ive been up there 3-4x a week and Ive never seen you hiking, Kevin. Maybe it is NIMBY-ish of me to question the logic of leaving no hiking trails in a community forest but I implore you to go hike along the Jacoby creek trail to the waterfall before they bring in the Cats. Its probably (after Jolly green giant trail) the second most beautiful trail in the entire greater community forest.

That's a good pointy, Matt. The City is still trying to help the forest recover from the brutal logging of the olden days. The harvests help introduce uneven-age tree stands, with lots of snags for wildlife and the sort of beneficial "chaos" that was destroyed by the old-school logging.

The kinds of selective logging practiced by many modern logging companies help the forest. The trees that are left are allowed to grow and fill in the gaps in the canopy. All you have to do is wander through the Arcata Community Forest to see the benefits of non-industrial selective logging.
