City of Arcata PRESS RELEASE
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
ARCATA POLICE ARREST THREE SUSPECTS FOR POSSESSION OF STOLEN PROPERTY; RECOVER OVER $25,000 OF STOLEN ITEMS
During the months of March through June, 2012 the City of Arcata saw a dramatic rise in auto thefts and auto burglaries. The vehicles were commonly stolen and stripped for parts or appeared to be used solely for joy rides. Any property of value was stolen from the inside of the vehicle. Arcata Police Department officers conducted a lengthy investigation, and were able to develop suspects in the case.
On Wednesday, June 27, officers from the Arcata Police Department located and arrested 28-year-old Paul Lester Bareilles of Eureka and his wife, 33-year-old Barbara Ranae Palmer of Eureka during a traffic stop. Stolen property was located in the vehicle at the time of the arrest. Two children, ages 6 and 9, were in the vehicle at the time of the arrests and were later released to family members.
A short time later, Arcata Police Department officers contacted and arrested 33-year-old Zachariah Scott Friedland of Arcata near his residence in the 1400 block of Buttermilk Lane in Arcata.
The investigation led officers to obtain and serve two search warrants. One search warrant was served at Friedland’s residence and the other at a nearby storage unit associated with Friedland. The officers located a substantial amount of stolen property at both locations linked to the previously reported stolen vehicles. The property included electronics, computers, outdoor equipment, musical instruments, clothing, digital cameras, auto parts, spotting scopes and survey equipment. The value of the stolen property is estimated to be between $25,000 and $30,000.
Paul Bareilles was arrested for possession of stolen property and probation violation. Barbara Palmer was arrested for possession of stolen property. Zachariah Friedland was arrested for possession of stolen property, possession of burglary tools and driving on a suspended license. All three individuals were booked and lodged at the Humboldt County Correctional Facility.
