Excellent read! I've heard brief info about him via Scott Binder, but it was a lot of fun to read this article! You know, I probably saw him a LOT as a kid and didn't even realize…plus moving out of Humboldt in 1989 didn't help either LOL!

During the late 1960's and into the 1970's I'd be driving to and from Arcata to my Father's automotive shop in Eureka…I'd see John hitch-hiking from time to time..and I'd pick him up. (Even though I had lots of automotive transportation, I often hitched rides between Arcata & Eureka myself..back then it was fun).

Sometimes we'd have a good conversation..sometimes he seemed to want to ride in silence. Either way, I always enjoyed him..and often wondered about his life, present and past.

For some reason, recently I've been thinking of many people from my past (I mostly live in San Francisco now)..and I have/had thought of John, and often wondered if he was still alive or what had happened to him.

Now, today I click online to the Humboldt newspapers..and I find this article and the photos.. Thanks for having this bio-story online..it brings my own past in Humboldt a little closer. George Shieman

I got to know Johnny while I was working in Orick.
as a woodcarver. I'd give him a ride sometimes.Once I asked him, "Has Humboldt changed much?" , to which he replied" Nah, same old shit" When I didn't pick him up, he'd flip me off. Sometimes we'd have to pull over so he could hock up. He reminded me of a barkeep (Bill Kunhardt) in my home town of Stafford, Ct. God Bless him.
