This most recent example of local vandalism should concern all friends of the Arcata Marsh. Jolly Giant Creek runs through the City of Arcata, above ground and below, and then reaches the Marsh, where it becomes Butcher's Slough. From there, the slough empties into Humboldt Bay. What happens upstream happens downstream, folks.
Sorry to post such a bummer on Thanksgiving Eve. Feel better tomorrow morning and join the annual T-Day walk at the Marsh. Meet on the deck of the Interpretive Center at 10 a.m.

(Oh, and true, I don't know what kind of lock the city used, but if the vandals had used a blow torch, I expect it'd be mentioned in the article, if not the headline.)

Buy a $100 New York quality Kryptonite lock. At least put up a challenge for vandals. The rule of thumb for buying a bike lock is to spend 10% of the value of your bike. I don't know why a hugely expensive public resource would be any different. You can get locks that can't be forced open, that have to be opened using a blow torch.
