BAYSIDE – Bayside volunteer groups have been following up on projects discussed in the large Bayside Community Potluck/Meeting nearly two years ago, in January, 2011.

Improving safety along Old Arcata Road and Jacoby Creek Road has been an ongoing concern and priority.

A $2,000 Better Together Grassroots Grant was awarded by Humboldt Area Foundation for the Old Arcata Road Neighborhoods Safety Initiative.

As follow-up, meetings have been scheduled at the Bayside Grange Hall this fall to involve interested Bayside residents in several safety-related working groups.

Two meeting times have been set for residents to attend the most convenient one.

Both transportation meetings will be held in the Bayside Grange kitchen, near the corner of Old Arcata Road and Jacoby Creek Road.

• Thursday, Nov. 8, 7 to 9 p.m.

• Sunday, Nov. 18, 2 to 4 p.m.

Participants will choose the projects they most want to work on—with neighbors—by first meeting at group tables, then developing action plans and schedules.

The results of the 2011 Walkability/Bikeability Audit and Community Survey will be summarized.

There will also be a brief report on the activities aimed at improving road safety to date.

Nextdoor Bayside, a free, on-line network for efficient neighborhood communications specific to Bayside residents and organizations has been provided by Humboldt County.

Nearly 50 Bayside residents have already joined Nextdoor Bayside and a brief presentation will explain its utility for road safety and community connection.

Because many of Humboldt County’s rural communities have a main street that is a popular route for speeding motorists, Bayside’s efforts to improve safety may be a useful model to others.
