Back in the day, lots of us used to go out to the North Jetty to shoot guns. What few of us thought about was sand doesn't stop bullets well. If the bullet doesn't hit the sand at pretty much a right angle, the bullet can fly off to wherever.

I recall one of the last times I went out there near the airport. I had a box I filled with sand so there wouldn't be any ricochets. There were some other folks maybe 150 yards away that were just shooting at cans with a sand dune for a back drop. Some of their rounds were flying by within feet of me.

Not sure if there's any recreational shooting being done out there now, but even if it's not allowed it wouldn't surprise me if someone might be out there plinking.
