I really work at this. I NEVER shop online...just visit the sites to see what exists, then go looking for it in town. For those of us on fixed or other low incomes, this can mean lifestyle decisions. If I want to do all my grocery shopping at ENF or Coop, I wind up serving more bean soups and one pot hippie food dishes. Because I don't have a boutique budget, no slavery-infested big boxes means used clothing and furniture. I have no trouble avoiding fast food joints, because most of the time my budget says there is no such thing as a restaurant, and if I'm going out once a month I'm not wasting it on grease-soaked cardboard! Even so, I confess...once in a while I wind up in Winco or the can store, for stuff that I can't get at ENF and can't quite afford at Murphy's or Ray's (broccoli slaw, low carb tortillas) or because I was a slob and spent money I shouldn't have in the early part of the month. But we small fish spend 100% of our income and make up an awful lot of everybody's customer base, so our decisions do matter. And the lower prices at big boxes are not just economy-of-scale: they reflect tax breaks for mega-corps, and the Pirate Subsidy of social services for the deliberately underemployed.
