McKINLEYILLE – On Tuesday, April 23 at approximately 6:45 p.m.,  the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office received a report of two dogs left beside the roadway in Vari-Kennels in the area of Dows Prairie Road and Blake Road in McKinleyville.

A deputy responded and located the dogs, a neutered 8-year-old Yellow Labrador Retriever mix, and a spayed 3-year-old black and white Heeler mix, in the care of a passing motorist who had noticed them. The Yellow Retriever was wearing a collar but no tags and there was no identifying information on either of the Vari-Kennels.

Shelter staff recalls seeing a posting on Craigslist within the past week where someone was trying to re-home two dogs that closely match the descriptions of the abandoned dogs, however the posting has been removed.

Abandonment of an animal is a crime. The Sheriff’s Office is seeking information that would assist in identifying the owner(s) of these dogs. Anyone with information is asked to call Animal Control Officer Nims at (707) 445-7251, or the Sheriff’s Crime Tip Line, (707) 268-2539.

Note: Roadside dog abandonment may be a new trend. – Ed.
