ARCATA – Well, it’s no Hot Rod Lincoln. But it might have been at some point, and maybe could be again, with sufficient wizardry by a well-funded professional restorer.

At this point it’s not much more than some green paint holding together a lot of rust in the shape of a 63-year-old car, but down at Arcata Bay Storage’s vehicle yard is what’s left of a 1950 Lincoln Cosmopolitan.

The rotting relic from a better, vanished time comes complete with a branch in the engine compartment and rope on the B-pillar, holding the doors, including the rear suicide door, somewhat shut.

Restored versions of the duck-and-cover era bulgemobile are popular with enthusiasts, and ABS Manager Geraldine Goldberg wonders whether the sagging hulk in her vehicle yard might be a diamond in the rough.

“When the CHP came out to verify the Lincoln’s VIN, one of the officers almost fell over when he saw the engine,” Goldberg said. He asked her, “Do you know what you have here?”
