BARN DANCE Celebrate the upcoming summer with a barn dance with caller Sue Moon and tunes by Blake Ritter and Sam McNeill on Saturday, May 18 from 8 to 11 p.m. at the Arcata Vets Hall. All dances will be taught with no partner or experience needed. Admission $7 general, $6 Humboldt Folklife Society members, students and seniors. Free for kids under 12. A cavalcade of activities await, including pony cart rides, a petting zoo, an array of games, crafts and food. Botanophiles will welcome the addition of a plant sale. SPRING BEES Join Friends of the Dunes and naturalist Pete Haggard on a hike in search of spring bees in the dunes on Saturday, May 18, from noon to 3 p.m. Discuss bee biology and tips for identifying local native species. BEACH VOLUNTEERS NEEDED Volunteers are needed to spend three-to-five hour shifts on weekends and holidays throughout the the summer conducting outreach activities at Clam and Little River beaches. In teams of two, volunteers will table and roam the beach surveying use and talking to the public about regulations, beach ecology and the threatened Western Snowy Plover. A Share the Beach volunteer training will be held Sunday, May 19 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Meet at the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service Office, 1655 Heindon Rd. Join Redwood Region Audubon Society on Sunday, May 19 on a half-day trip just south of Alderpoint to see the birds, plant life, and reptiles of the Eel River canyon. The group will walk the railroad tracks about two miles to Cain Rock trestle and back (there are no trains) including a walk down a steep bank and back up to get around a washout. A short side trip to Smith Point Bridge may also be made after the trip. Bring sun protection, layered clothing, and a small pack with lunch and water. A North Coast MPA Baseline Program Bidders Conference will be held Thursday, May 9 from 4 to 7:30 p.m. at the Humboldt Bay Aquatic Center, 921 Waterfront Drive, Eureka. Those interested in participating in the North Coast MPA Baseline Program are invited to the upcoming bidders conference. During this event, potential applicants will have the opportunity to consider and discuss the RFP, ask questions of the Baseline Program partners, and engage with others interested in participating in the Baseline Program. The conference is being held to facilitate the formation of partnerships and promote the exchange of information and ideas among applicants and collaborators, including those involved in existing monitoring programs in the North Coast region. Any Arcata citizen or anyone who lives or works within the Arcata Planning Area is invited to apply for this influential City commission. Arcata’s Planning Commissioners are volunteers who attend two meetings a month which are televised live on Suddenlink Access Humboldt Cable Channel 10 and also webstreamed at cityofarcata.org. The seven-member Planning Commission has final decision making authority for most planning and physical development permits in the Arcata area. Anyone applying to build or develop land in Arcata must have their plans reviewed and approved by this Commission. “The Planning Commission plays a key role in shaping Arcata’s future,” says the City’s Community Development Director, Larry Oetker. Applications will be accepted until 5 p.m. on Friday, July 5.
