Collections of insects, skulls, birds and more will be brought out of the vault to examine and interpret using the artistic medium of your choice. Participate in a mini-art show at the conclusion of the evening with your newly created works. These will be left on display for the March 9 Arts! Arcata reception. Basic drawing and painting supplies will be provided for those who do not bring their own. Children are encouraged to attend with adult supervision. Standard museum admission applies. Thursday Feb. 23 from from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. is a children’s program called Wildlife Investigators. On Friday Feb. 24 from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.is Rings of Our Lives for children. Be part of the annual tradition of removing invasive yellow bush lupines before they get the chance to produce more seed. Meet at the Pacific Union School parking lot in Arcata at 9:30am to carpool to the site at the Lanphere Dunes. FOAM MARSH TOUR Friends of the Arcata Marsh (FOAM) is sponsoring a free tour of the Arcata Marsh & Wildlife Sanctuary on Saturday, Feb. 25 at 2 p.m. Meet leader Art Barab at the Interpretive Center on South G Street for a 90-minute walk focusing on the history, birds, and ecology of the Marsh. (707) 826-2359. CLAM BEACH HIKE On Sunday, Feb. 26, North Group Sierra Club is sponsoring a free public hike from Clam Beach to the mouth of Mad River in McKinleyville. This six-mile, medium-difficulty walk will start south along the beach via a route that visits streams and wetlands. Return along the Hammond Trail. Bring water and snacks. Fit, well-socialized, leashed dogs welcome. Two shallow stream crossings are necessary. Heavy rain cancels. Meet at 12:30 p.m. at southern, unpaved Clam Beach parking lot. I call it Loophole Recycling. It’s a loophole for local governments that have not been able to comply with state mandated goals for landfill diversion. In the proposal to transport in a single-stream to Willits, it is especially “loophole recycling” because it must be dumped twice and is further contaminated. »
