55-on-255

Manilans gathered on State Route 255 recently to advocate for people not driving like bats out of hell down the state highway that bifurcates their community. Top, attendees unveiled special signs to welcome and caution motorists to obey the speed limit. Above left, the event featured children’s activities. Right, the Raging Grannies sang inspirational songs. Caltrans announced a public open house for the Route 255 Engineered Feasibility Study, Wednesday, Feb. 15 from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. at the Manila Community Center, 1611 Peninsula Drive. The drop-in style open house will look at possible improvements to State Route 255 from Eureka to Arcata. After presentations at 4:30 and 5:30 p.m. there will be an an opportunity for the public to review displays, ask questions of Caltrans staff, and make comments and suggestions. The engineered feasibility study has investigated a full range of needs, options, ideas, opportunities and constraints for traffic calming and non-motorized traffic accommodations along Route 255. It will be used as a reference document identifying potential improvement projects. Photos courtesy Kevin Patterson

Members of the 2012 Arcata Eye Rockestra gathered Thursday night to work on tunes they’ll play at the 15th Annual Arcata Eye Ball Saturday, Feb. 18 at the Arcata Theatre Lounge. Left to right, Wolf Navarro, Rob Amerman, Dan Davis, Marla Joy, Mark Lovelace and Rick Park. Rockestra members not shown are Kelly Brannon, Pete Ciotti, Andrew Goff, Kelly Hoover, Kevin Hoover, Josephine Johnson, Terrence McNally, Hank Sims and Ross Rowley. What songs will they play? For now, let’s just say it’s a “unique eclectic blend.” Which ROCKS. KLH | Eye

h-street-confusion

The H Street Pedestrian Improvement Project includes a special multi-use lane (painted green and located south of the planters that block through-traffic) for trucks to park in while making deliveries and for bikes to use unmolested by car traffic. In practice, though, some delivery trucks are continuing to park in the traffic lane, forcing vehicles to use the delivery lane to get around them. If a truck came along and used the delivery lane for deliveries at the same moment, we’d have a plugged bottleneck. Photos by KLH | Eye
