Cal Poly Humboldt held a ceremony in mid-October 2024 to celebrate the start of construction on its Engineering & Technology (E&T) building, a roughly 74,000-square-foot, three-story facility slated to open in summer 2026 for fall classes.

Design and Sustainability

The project, designed by AC Martin and built by Swinerton, is funded through the state’s polytechnic investment in the campus. Planners highlight mass-timber structural elements sourced from the Pacific Northwest rather than steel, an approach university officials say reduces embodied carbon and saved an estimated $1.3 million compared with a conventional steel frame.

Campus Connections

The building will anchor the northeast corner of B and 17th streets on ground that previously served as an events field. Outdoor fabrication space faces Wildlife Lane, while plaza and connector designs link the new structure to McCrone Hall—reflecting a goal of pulling engineering students into a south-campus loop of labs, makerspaces, and field work.

Polytechnic Momentum in Arcata

The E&T project arrives alongside housing expansion, renovated teaching labs, and new research infrastructure tied to Humboldt’s polytechnic designation. For Arcata, the construction timeline means several years of visible crane activity, contractor traffic, and eventually hundreds of students training in engineering disciplines that previously had limited dedicated space on campus.
